Canning vs Vacuum Sealing: Which is Better?
Food preservation is simply the art of treating and handling in a perfect way so that it doesn’t spoil and become dangerous to eat.
When foods are preserved, their colour, texture and quality would remain intact, and when you eat such foods, you won’t contact any sickness from it. Food preservation is also the prevention of bacteria, fungi and lots of microorganisms, and is an invention that saves millions of tonnes of wastage every year, which can only be a good thing! However, there are different methods to preserve food, so we’ve put two of them head to head in this article.
Types of preservation methods
Essentially, there are two kinds of preservation methods we are looking at in this article, namely Vacuum sealing and Canning
These two types of food preservation methods are most popular in homes and among food manufacturers.
We are going to attempt to explain the meaning of each of them, and from the analysis you will now know the one that is suitable for your own needs whether you’re looking at business use, storing produce you have grown yourself, catering or just home use for feeding your family and preventing waste.
This is specifically done to preserve food. You can seal it in jars, pouches and cans and then heat (if needed) at particular temperature and the aim is to destroy the contaminating microorganism.
Some of the foods that can be canned include dairy products, meat, poultry, seafood, highly acidic foods like fruits, and so on, and although it is a good method for large scale such as growing huge amounts of produce, it isn’t quite as easy to do on a small scale at home, and though you can put some produce in jars you have to be careful that it is done correctly.
This is a relatively new product in the market, and it is also very popular. It helps in preserving food items. It doesn’t have any side effect on the food either. This product is currently being used by many food processing and manufacturing industries as well as at home. If you hadn’t guessed, it is a vacuum sealer, the focus of our site.
When foods are vacuum packed, the air gets sucked directly out and the effects of oxidation are minimized too. It slows down and controls the growth of bacterial, mould and fungi. So, if you really want to make your foods to remain fresh for a long period of time and want something easy to do at home, this is probably the best option for you. If you browse through the internet, you would be amazed to know that there are so many online stores that deal on quality vacuum sealers.
The two products described above are extremely different, so aren’t necessarily in direct competition with each other, especially when it comes to home use. Both food preservation methods are unique and entails that the food would be preserved in a container.
However, in canning the food will need to be sealed and this kills microorganisms. This is the main reasons why you don’t need to store the food in the fridge and it can keep for such a hugely long period of time, but in vacuum packaging, the food can remain fresh in the fridge or freezer for a longer period of time. It is composed of two types; handheld and counter top models. They have great sealing strength, stronger suction and are more durable and while canning isn’t always the most effective or easy option in our own kitchens, but vacuum sealing is.
Another good reason why people go for it is simply because it is highly economical. The texture, colour and quality of foods would be maintained longer than if you had stored the foods by canning or using other, less effective methods.
Having gone through these methods, it is up to you to choose the one that is most suitable for you. Wasting food in the modern age is not something you should have to worry about, and these products can ensure that you don’t.
